please don't ever drink and drive

A family here in Toronto was hit by a drunk driver very recently - I think it was on Christmas Eve, but I'm not sure.

Anyways, one of the parents and two of the children died as a result of that accident. The mother and one teenage daughter are still alive. But what a tragedy.

It is a joy to be fully alive in the awareness of who I am as God's child. It means for me that every experience I enjoy is infused with the vitality of the presence of a God who created me to be a very sense-ual person. I know that He loves me and wants me to live fully. I am grateful for the freedom He gives me as well as the wisdom to appreciate what He has made good in balance and moderation. It is my responsibility as a recipient of all of His gifts to be their good steward. I now look forward to the arrival of my husband's and my first-born, a son. When he has come and no longer needs me for his nourishment, I look forward with much anticipation to a fine wine with meals and friends. Until then, charge a glass in my stead.

Merry Christmas to all!

Just like most things in life, maturity and responsibility are key. For some, there is no such thing as one drink.

Those with an alcoholic predisposition I think should choose libations very wisely. Growing up, drinking alcohol was the same as sinning. I realized later, my convictions do not subscribe to this idea. For me, my conscience dictates moderation. I have failed that a few times, to be honest, but 98% of the time alcohol has been a very minor, and enjoyable aspect to my life, and friendships. Just a treat enjoyed on occasion. I’m encouraged to see the wisdom spoken here.

Gosh, for a Baptist girl this is a very interesting conversation. My husband and I didn't really drink anything until we were in our 30's and I think that was probably good. We married young and had children, so partying wasn't part of our lives and we were always in pretty conservative circles.

We really only drink red wine (and my husband loves those obnoxious dark beers) with dinner or at an Italian restaurant--can't eat at Olive Garden without a good glass of red wine. I'm glad to keep hearing that it's good for my heart and I would say we drink only in moderation--without getting drunk. I'll enjoy a very rare mixed drink--Long Islands--yum, yum but one is more than enough!!

I'm glad someone said something about driving, though. I really have no objection to what anyone chooses to drink or how much they enjoy, but please don't ever drink and drive. Can you tell I went to a MADD meeting once? I think everyone with a driver's license should have to go to one of those--it's pretty sobering!

Salut! and Merry, merry Christmas!

I didn't have my first drink until way after I turned 21, thanks to the Pentecostal college experience and knowing that I was silly enough sober.

My wonderful husband got me drinking dark microbrewed beers from the start, and now I have a porter or stout (or three) a week. Who would think that they could make beer taste so much like coffee and chocolate? :-) Our emergent cohort in Indy will often meet at a brewpub.

And during the holidays, nothing says "winter warmup" like the new Mint Chocolate Baileys...goes great with gift wrapping. (I haven't tried the Caramel variation yet, but I hear it's also wonderful.)

The "rule" at our river house is that enjoyment of well-crafted beverages is encouraged; drunkenness is unacceptable.

Like Mike said, we have wine a few times a week with dinner. Usually not expensive stuff, but decent cheap stuff from Trader Joe's. We don't drink pop and Mike gets coffee free from work, so the beverage budget goes to wine. I'm currently on a Pinot Grigio kick, but spiced hot wine is great this time of year.

For fun bar drinks - I like a good margerita. Ameretto on the rocks is a favorite, as are Baileys and cream, and Dirty Girl Scouts (kahula, vodka, cream, and peppermint schnapps). I hate being drunk or more than slightly tipsy so its never a lot at once. I went to a christian college so I never experienced the drunk college party thing, although I have been to Cancun...

I went from rabid tee-totaller in my teens and early twenties to raging boozer in my mid twenties and now, in my early thirties, I have a happy medium of being able to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine without getting obnoxious. I'm giving up in the new year in order to lose a few pounds and sleep better. I adore a good Chilean Merlot, a ice cold Corona with a slice of lime, a vodka martini with a green olive and a shot of Black Bush. But not all together you understand! And no, just because I am Irish I am not enraptured by Guinness. Someone mentioned Baileys poured over ice cream...ummm, sounds gooooooood!

Growing up, drinking was taboo. My parents still hold to that view. When I lost some of my hang-ups, I tried several of my hubby's drinks and even ordered a girly drink of my own. I was so bummed out that I had paid so much extra for a drink that I loved the virgin form of and didn't really like the alcoholic version. I decided it's just too expensive to go to the trouble of acquiring a taste for it.
